How Many Star Ratings Does Your Podcast Have (and What's the Average?)

Dan Misener at Bumper conducted an extensive analysis of the podcast landscape by examining the star ratings of 30 million podcasts, revealing fascinating insights into the distribution of listener engagement across the medium. His findings offer a revealing glimpse into the competitive nature of podcasting and the significance of listener ratings. According to Misener's research, having just four individuals leave star ratings on your podcast places you above more than 50% of the podcasts he analyzed. This statistic underscores the reality that a significant portion of podcasts struggle to engage a wide audience or encourage listener interaction in the form of ratings.

The data further illustrates that as the number of star ratings increases, the percentile ranking of a podcast among its peers sharply rises. For instance, a podcast with 12 people having left star ratings surpasses more than 75% of all podcasts examined. This jump to the 75th percentile with just a dozen ratings highlights the long tail of podcasting, where a small number of shows capture the majority of listener engagement. The trend continues, with 41 people leaving star ratings pushing a podcast into the top 10%, and achieving ratings from 103 individuals vaults a podcast into the elite top 5%. Misener's analysis not only sheds light on the distribution of podcast popularity but also emphasizes the importance of engaging with and growing a podcast's listener base to stand out in a crowded and competitive field.
